Ultrasound

We provide a comprehensive ultrasound service for babies, children, adults and expectant mothers including general, vascular and obstetric scans. We have a highly experienced team and modern ultrasound machines, equipped with the latest technology and infection control measures.

Ultrasound machines produce images by sending and receiving high-energy soundwaves through your body. These soundwaves bounce off different parts of the body and return echoes to the ultrasound machine which are then digitally-converted into an image. Sonographers are highly trained healthcare professionals who conduct these exams and will guide you through this process. Ultrasound has many advantages – they are painless, safe and do not involve x-ray radiation. Therefore, this test is widely used in pregnant mothers, babies and children.

You may be asked to change into a gown for your scan. Following this, your sonographer will apply ultrasound gel on the area being scanned. This gel allows the ultrasound waves to effectively pass through your body and produce clear images. The Sonographer will place an ultrasound probe on the area to be scanned to commence the imaging process. Ocassionally, an internal scan may be required and your sonographer will discuss this with you before proceeding.

Ultrasound scans can take between 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. If you experience any discomfort or pain, please let the sonographer or other staff know. Northern Health respects your comfort, safety and privacy. This will be maintained at all times, particularly for examinations which are more intimate in nature.

Preparation will depend on the type of ultrasound study your doctor has requested. Our reception team will confirm your appointment and any applicable preparation in the week leading up to your appointment.
